HISTORY

How It All Began

It all began 30 years ago in the summer of 1969 while having a picnic at the beach house of Dr. and Mrs. Pablito Mojica. A few families met and talked about starting an organization or some kind of a club that we could identify with. There was that longing for cohesiveness between our countrymen and support for each other, and the need to preserve our culture, tradition and identity. Through the leadership of a very nationalistic man, Pablito, we then decided to create the "Samahang Pilipino ng Oakland" and he was elected unanimously to become the President of this newly formed group. The founding members are Drs. Pablito and Evangeline Mojica, Drs. Esper and Lovell Guanco, Citas Coniconde, Dave and Aida Davis, Dr. Mercedes and Larry Luzod, Dr. Ric and Auring Yuzon, Dolfo and Yoly Ramos, Dr. Carlito and Becky Mojica, Dr. Virgie and Arnold Pacis, Arthur and Nora Sese, Tony and Flor Sison, Drs. Gus and Rose Gustilo and Josie Innocentes.

Through the years the membership grew in number and new sets of officers were elected every two years. New activites were introduced for fun and fellowship. As we became more stable and confident as an organization, we started fund raising projects for worthy causes. Bowl-a-thons were held in 1986 and 1995 to benefit the Philippine American Cultural Center. It was also decided to give monetary gift to graduating high school children of our members signifying our support for their pursuit of higher learning. We also tried to extend financial help to families who had lost a close family member or had experienced some financial difficulty because of a disaster or calamity. We also participated in a Walk-a-thon to help the United Way.

In September of 1994, we celebrated the 25th Anniversary of the SPO held at the Troy Marriot. About 250 guests graced that formal and elegant party. It was an affair we all remembered for a long time. Since that time, a lot of good and positive things have happened to this unique organization.
